A RACE TO THE END 🔚
Why Weight Maintenance Is the Skill Most People Never Learn.
You've lost the weight.
You smashed your fat loss phase, hit your goal, took the progress photos, and finally felt comfortable in your own skin.
Then six months later...
The weight starts creeping back on.
Not because your metabolism is broken.
Not because your diet "stopped working."
Because you never learned how to maintain your weight.
Fat Loss Is Temporary. Weight Maintenance Is Forever.
Here's something I tell my clients all the time:
There is never an end goal to your health.
It's a lifelong pursuit.
Well... it is if you give a shit, have standards, and actually want to be healthy. 🤣
Too many people treat health like a destination.
"Once I've lost the weight, I'll be done."
The reality?
Once you've lost the weight, that's where the real work begins.
Not harder work. Smarter work.
Stop Thinking Every Weight Increase Means Fat Gain
One of the biggest mistakes people make after losing weight is panicking when the scales go up.
Here's the truth:
It's completely normal for your body weight to increase when you move from a calorie deficit to maintenance calories.
Why?
Because your body stores more glycogen (carbohydrate), and every gram of glycogen holds water. You'll also have more food sitting in your digestive system.
That doesn't mean you've suddenly gained body fat.
It means your body is functioning exactly as it should.
If you freak out every time the scales move, you'll end up jumping straight back into another fat loss phase.
And that's exactly what keeps people trapped in the yo-yo dieting cycle.
Fat Loss Should Have an Exit Strategy
A calorie deficit is a tool.
It's not somewhere you're supposed to live.
The goal should always be:
Lose body fat.
Return to maintenance calories.
Stay there long enough to build sustainable habits.
Only diet again when there's a genuine reason.
I always say:
Get in. Get out.
Your maintenance phase should be longer than your fat loss phase.
That's where you build consistency.
That's where your habits become automatic.
That's where lasting results are created.
Maintenance Isn't Eating Whatever You Want
A lot of people hear "maintenance" and think it means:
Stop tracking.
Stop paying attention.
Stop walking.
Skip training.
Eat whatever you fancy.
That's not maintenance.
That's simply stopping.
Maintaining your results means maintaining the behaviours that got you there.
You don't need to be perfect.
You do need to stay consistent.
The Habits That Actually Keep Weight Off
The people who maintain their results for years tend to keep doing the basics:
Strength training consistently.
Hitting a daily step target.
Eating plenty of protein.
Managing stress.
Prioritising sleep.
Being mindful of portion sizes.
Having structure without feeling restricted.
Notice none of those involve living on chicken and broccoli.
They're simply sustainable habits.
Why Most People Regain the Weight
Most people spend months learning how to lose weight...
But spend zero time learning how to maintain it.
That's why they keep starting over every January.
New diet.
New challenge.
New "quick fix."
Same outcome.
The problem isn't a lack of motivation.
It's a lack of education and accountability.
Coaching Isn't Just About a Meal Plan
I give away a lot of free advice because I genuinely want people to succeed.
I'll always answer questions where I can.
But information isn't usually what's missing.
The difference is accountability.
That's the glue.
Having someone to challenge your thinking, educate you, adjust your plan when life gets messy, and stop you from making emotional decisions around food and the scales.
That's where real coaching changes lives.
Final Thoughts
If you're constantly chasing another fat loss phase, ask yourself why.
Are you actually struggling to lose weight...
Or are you struggling to keep it off?
Because they're two very different problems.
If you can master weight maintenance, you'll never have to keep starting over.
And that's where real freedom begins.
