A COACH WHO LISTENS
Why the Best Coaches Listen More Than They Talk.
There are plenty of coaches who can write a training programme.
There are plenty who can tell you what to eat.
But the coaches who change lives?
They listen.
That's one of the biggest differences between simply giving someone a plan and actually coaching them.
Be a Coach, Not a Dictator
One of the biggest problems I see in the fitness industry is coaches assuming they know exactly what someone needs before they've even finished explaining their situation.
A client says they're struggling...
The coach interrupts.
"Track your calories."
"You're not trying hard enough."
"Just be more disciplined."
Problem solved?
Not even close.
Listening is one of the most valuable coaching skills you can have, yet it's one of the most overlooked.
Every client comes with different experiences, different beliefs around food, different lifestyles and different barriers.
If you don't understand those first, how can you possibly coach them properly?
Coaching Isn't About Giving Orders
Anyone can tell someone what to do.
Eat this.
Train four times a week.
Walk 10,000 steps.
Drink more water.
The information isn't the difficult part.
Helping someone consistently apply that information in real life is where coaching begins.
That's why I don't believe in dictating to clients.
I believe in working with them.
The best coaching isn't about control.
It's about collaboration.
Real Coaching Takes Time
People often ask why my coaching isn't built around quick transformations.
Simple.
Because meaningful, lasting change doesn't happen in six weeks.
It takes time to build trust.
Time to understand someone's habits.
Time to identify what's really holding them back.
Time to help them develop the skills they'll need long after coaching finishes.
That's one of the reasons I work with clients over 12 months or more whenever possible.
Not because results take that long.
Because maintaining those results is the real goal.
Quick Fixes Create Repeat Customers
The fitness industry loves before-and-after photos.
Fast transformations.
Extreme challenges.
Why?
Because they grab attention.
But here's the problem.
If your only focus is getting someone rapid results for social media, you're often putting a plaster over the real issue.
You might help them lose weight.
But have you taught them how to keep it off?
Can they manage holidays?
Stress?
Busy work weeks?
Social events?
If the answer is no, then you've helped them diet, not changed their life.
Accountability Is More Than Weekly Check-Ins
People often think accountability is someone asking:
"Did you hit your steps?"
"Did you track your food?"
For me, accountability goes much deeper.
It's asking better questions.
Listening properly.
Understanding why someone struggled before trying to fix it.
Helping them spot patterns they couldn't see themselves.
Sometimes clients don't need another nutrition tip.
Sometimes they just need someone to genuinely hear them.
Coaching Is About Leaving People Better Than You Found Them
When someone finishes coaching with me, I don't want them leaving with just a lighter body.
I want them leaving with:
Better habits.
More confidence.
A healthier relationship with food.
Greater self-awareness.
The knowledge to maintain their results.
Confidence to navigate life's ups and downs without starting over.
That's the standard.
And it's one I'll never lower.
The Fitness Industry Can Do Better
I'll be honest...
The fitness industry winds me up sometimes. 🤣
There's too much noise.
Too many quick fixes.
Too many coaches chasing likes instead of changing lives.
But I won't lower my standards to compete.
I'd rather build genuine relationships, coach fewer people exceptionally well, and create lasting change than chase viral transformations.
Because that's what coaching should be.
Final Thoughts
The best coaches aren't the ones with the loudest voices.
They're the ones who ask questions.
They listen.
They understand.
Then they coach.
If you're looking for someone to bark orders at you, I'm probably not your coach.
But if you're looking for someone who'll educate you, challenge you, support you and genuinely care about helping you build results that last, that's exactly what we do at All Round Coaching.
Because great coaching isn't about creating dependency.
It's about giving people the confidence and skills to succeed for life.
